It's very efficient - to send a DM (aka Direct Message) to someone right after they follow you. But if you getting a lot of these in your inbox, it can get a little annoying! Here's an aritcle that presents the argument well. What do you think?

I am so naive, for a long time I didn't even know that there could be an auto DM, I guess those that are new to Twitter wouldn't know either. Funny, intuitively I always responded to the personal DM's that I received, those that bothered to visit our site or who said something personal or who wanted to connect for business. You can really tell when it is auto DM and when it is personal.

I don't send auto-dm's when someone follows me on Twitter. In my opinion, it's kind of an understood 'no-no'. Many people, from what I can see or read, dislike them and, sometimes, will even unfollow those that send auto-dm's.
