Blog - Burning Questions from Members

Should small brands go after big retailers? Maybe...maybe not. Katie Danziger, Founder nomie baby explains pros and cons

Collective-E member Katie Danziger, Founder of nomie baby is facing the challenge that many small brands face as they look to grow, focus on smaller retailers or go for the big time.  Yes, a big retailer with a huge order may make a big difference, but an order from Target...and the time and energy to get that order, comes with its own set of issues:

  • Bigger retailers take much more time and energy, and have a whole lot more red tape and rules, is it worth it?
  • What if you get a huge order, on a net 30, 45 or 90 payment...can you afford to front the production costs?
  • Are you missing opportunities for more smaller retailers by focusing only on big?
  • Can you effectively focus on both big and small?

There isn't one good answer to these burning questions, but Katie does a great job describing what it is like for her in this blog posting >

How to Pitch for Valentine's Day

Well it's that time of year again, Valentine's Day.....WHAT ?!?  You're probably thinking I've finally lost my mind because if you're reading this in "real time" it's only (barely)  the second week of January....How could we be talking about Valentine's Day when we just finished taking down our Christmas tree?

The fact of the matter is, media has already begun planning their short lead Valentine's Day articles, segments and gift guides. (Note to your pr campaign: long lead stories in places like monthly magazines closed in fall 2009, because these publications work 3-6 months in advance).  Sure short lead outlets like blogs, television, newspapers and weekly magazines work quickly and turn over stories on a daily basis, but when they know something big like a holiday or annual event is coming, they're sure to prepare ahead of time.  They also want to be sure they have the best gift guides, experts, segments and topics squared away and available to us (the viewing/listening/reading public) prior to the holiday so that they can help us shop, prepare and get ready ahead of time.

Because this holiday is only about a month away, they're well under way with Valentine's Day preparation in most short lead outlets.  This means as a small business or entrepreneur you need to be well under way with your outreach and Valentine's Day offerings asap.  Remember - the early birds get the worms!

With that in mind, CLICK HERE to find tips for pitching products, services and experts, as well as pitching ideas and what you need to do to prepare....so get ready to take some notes and do some outreach!

How to get on the Today Show, Good Morning America, and other Morning Shows

The Today Show and other morning showsWhen talking about pitching the morning shows like the Today Show, whether you are on the publicist side of the fence or the client side, everyone knows there is a Holy Grail that many small businesses are reaching for - a Trifecta of placements for the pr side of a campaign.  Without a doubt they tend to be: Oprah, the Today Show, Good Morning America, the CBS Early Show, The View, CNBC, CNN...You get the picture.

Several of our Collective-E members have been featured on the Today Show, including designer Sabina Les and Gemma Redux. Mom inventor Katie Danziger of nomie baby made her way onto the CBS Morning Show. Because these shows tape constantly - the morning shows tape EVERY morning - they need a good story to fill air time. The key to rising above all of the other pitches they receive is: know how to pitch the outlet before you jump in blindly and start spamming them.

We've shared tips on how to pitch Oprah with you in the past, so now we're going to move on to some key things you MUST know about pitching the morning shows.  If you understand what they want, and how you can present it to them, then you are halfway there.  People with little to no pr experience have landed a key spot on the Today Show.  How?  They sent a quick and direct pitch and followed some rules that made it easier for the producers to see just how useful their story is.

How did we get our tips for getting on the Today Show and other morning shows? Through experience of course, but also through speaking directly with the producers themselves about what they want.

Before you click on our tips for pitching the morning shows, there are some tips that are so basic and important, you must know them before all others:

  • Know your outlet.
  • NEVER pitch a show if you haven't  watched a couple recent episodes.
  • Know which host covers which segments.
  • Know the host's style (is it "nighttime style in the daytime", "celebrity driven", "serious news", "tips and tricks")
  • Know to the best of your ability who produces the show (do this through reasearch, watching the show credits, looking online, checking the Collective-E lifestyle show contact list going live next week)
  • Know what time they tape the show before it airs.
  • Know what the show has done segment-wise in the past month or so. This will ensure you aren't pitching the same stories they are currently covering, which would be bad.

At the end of the day, your job is to provide great content for these morning shows so that they can pass on to their viewers.  If you aren't doing this and telling them how you can do this in a quick, easy to read pitch, your attempts at getting onto the Today Show and other morning shows will be an uphill climb.

Here at Collective-E, we provide several contacts at the Today Show and other morning shows. Collective-E members have direct access to these contacts. Our members also get PR Leads from us, which from time to time include opportunities to pitch the big morning shows as well as local morning shows, to build your PR portfolio and gain credibility. To get access to these contacts and PR Leads, click here to join Collective-E. The member benefits we offer include much more than media contacts and PR Leads, so learn more about how Collective-E can help build your brand.

Burning question: Katie Danziger, Founder Nomie Baby asks, is opening an Amazon store a good idea?

We keep hearing that during these challenging economic times, it is more important than ever to be creative and flexible, and as far as sales are concerned, focusing on internet sales may be the best way to go right now.  Therefore, my first step was to join the Collective-E Agency, set up time with co-founder Katie Hellmuth to revamp the nomie baby website to make sure that it was as user friendly and SEO optimized as possible.  The next step was to join Twitter, set up my Facebook fan page and reach out to other online stores, sites and blogs to help spread the word.  I then heard about the power of Amazon as a great way for entrepreneurs to sell their products.  I contacted a friend who has had an Amazon "store" for about 6 months to find out her thoughts and ask whether it has been worthwhile, and what's involved.   While she did say that it takes some time to set up, in the end it has been worth the $39.99/month plus fees.  Here are her thoughts and insights:

“It's great, as we are able to get to people who don't find us otherwise (in searches) and it's also great to be able to look at our marketing because of the "people who viewed this also looked at ___" function.  To get started you have to set up a separate seller account and decide how you want to do it do you want to just be on but you do fulfillment, or do you want them to warehouse and ship your items for you.  If you go to the seller section to set up the account.   It can be a little confusing because if you don't have a UPC code or ISDN number you have to set it up as an independent seller, and getting your items in the right category sometimes takes a little work.  They have a good customer service/technical service email or phone, so just get in touch with them.  I couldn't possibly start to tell you how to actually set up the whole thing, except to say it takes quite a while, so don't think it's going to take just a couple of hours...but I think it's worth it!”
