Collective-E & Members Give to Haiti Relief Effort

The crisis in Haiti has made us face not only one of the worst natural disasters in years, but the best of compassion on a global scale.  Over 200 million dollars in donations have been made so far, but the need for donations continues, as it will long after the television cameras have turned away from the aftermath of the earthquake.

We have been in direct contact with the CNN team in Haiti and their best description?  Horrible.  The worst, well, you can only imagine.  At Collective-E, we've decided to pledge 10% of our new membership as well as our renewals through February 20th to Partners in Health, a very active non-profit in the crisis who have been on the ground in Haiiti for over 20 years.  You can check out their founder talking to Katie Couric about the crisis here.

Many of our members are also giving portions of their sales to help various charities and their efforts in Haiti which has prompted us to begin compiling a list that we will soon house on our website as well as this blog, to inform conscious consumers about brands that are giving back.

We at Collective-E know that the power of  community is what not only makes a business grow and flourish, but is also necessary to practice and exhibit on a global scale.

Finally, Obama administration proposes a $30 billion plan to encourage lending to small business.

We'll see what happens, and not sure what it means to "encourage lending," but it would be very smart of the Obama Administration to help small business, the engine for growth and hiring for the economy.   We'll see!

"An internal document obtained by The Associated Press spell out how the Treasury Department plans to spend money from the fund before it expires in October 2010. The document show $40 billion would go to consumer and business lending programs.  Of that amount, $30 billion would support lending to small companies, according to a Treasury official who spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because no final decisions on the program have been made."

Will this help you in any way?

WPIX (The Gossip Girl Station) Welcomes 4 Collective-E Members

About a month ago, we put out a quick PR Lead to Collective-E members about a Vampire segment - "Twilight Style".  In fact, a second call for it had such a quick turnaround that we sent it out via our private email group

The inside scoop?  Our PR team put together a segment for one of our favorite news anchors, Tamsen Fadal at WPIX (an entrepreneur herself) about the hottest topic gripping hold of the entertainment world lately - VAMPIRES!  Thanks to your responses we were able to use some of our members in the segment - a perfect example of a Random Act of Pitching, a Collective-E member-only benefit.

This fun Halloween segment aired this Thursday morning at 6:50am and scored a few minutes of coveted air time! Click here to see the vampire segment on CW's blog. The spot is called "Vampire Style",  and here are which Collective-E members were in the lineup:

Michelle Madhok, founder SheFinds Media
Michelle MadhokThe lovely Michell Madhok will be hosting the segment. Michelle is an experienced spokesperson with a great sense of style and founder of hot style scoop and fashion deals website www.shefinds.com. Find out how she became a spokesperson for Paypal.

Check out Michelle's write-up of the morning segment on SheFinds.

Mariann Smith, founder and chief soap maker Just Bubbly
Ghost soap for HalloweenMariann has a lot of duck soap gifts to choose from, and the CW went with vampire duckies...how cute! The soap pictured here is a ghost from her Halloween Soaps collection.  Not a kid?  Don't worry Michele also  features Champagne Bubble Bath & more!

Michele Baratta, founder and designer Michele Baratta at Home, a California Jewelry Company
Michele Baratta silver soul love locketMichele answered the call for the lead right away, and her locket jewelry was picked up to show off the layered look. This just goes to show why you should think creatively about answering a lead - to find a reason why you would work. These lockets are described as being "soul necklaces"...could be spooky but in a romantic kind of way!

Stefany Di Manno, founder and designer Di Manno Designs
Genuine leather black wrist cuffs/bands, Di Manno DesignsStefany's leather wrist cuffs and leather pony holders are so versatile, they couldn't not work in this segment. In fact, she's going over well for at the Bridal Magazines right now...stay tuned for reports from her desksides, aka appointments with editors.

Congratulations Everyone!

The New York Times says "Small is Beautiful," we couldn't agree more!

This Op-Ed in the New York Times by Jack Ma, founder and chief executive of the Alibaba Group., describes what we have been seeing for awhile, the transition from big business to small business.  This transition has been made possible by innovations in web-based technologies that have leveled the playing field; now, anyone from anywhere in the world can compete and reach customers on a global scale.

"These Netrepreneurs will operate with minimal overhead, allowing for both lower prices and lucrative margins, as well as fair compensation for employees, suppliers, partners and themselves. Their primary task: focus on making customers happy and treating partners and other stakeholders fairly while the technologies of the platform take care of the rest."

Reinvention is the New Black

Tevis Gale, founder of Balance Integration, and a leading expert on on helping people think better, lead better and feel better in corporate and personal settings using worklife strategies and corporate yoga methods, wrote a clear and compelling article in her blog space on Huffington Post on how Reivention is the New Black. She used our Beth Schoendfeldt as one of her examples, citing Beth's career shift which led her to co-found Collective-E with Sabina Ptacin and myself. Tevis has always made very good use of her Huffington space, and we thank her for this insight!

Collective Insider Series: Zappos just sold to Amazon for $840 Million, our exclusive Q&A with CEO Tony Hsieh

Zappos acquired by AmazonZappos CEO Tony Hsieh was generous enough to answer questions from Collective-E and our members. We asked our members if they had any questions for Tony, just as we will be doing with other influential entrepreneurs for our Collective Insider Series.  This series seeks the most innovative ideas and creative strategies tested by other successful entrepreneurs and guaranteed to help your business now!   Congratulations to Tony and to Zappos for the acquisition by Amazon,  his answers shed light on how Zappos became an target and how despite their massive growth they stayed true to their brand and superior customer service.

If you had to explain to our members why you believe Zappos.com has been so successful, what key reasons would you attribute it to?
I think it's because of our focus customer service and company culture. Our whole belief is that if we get the culture right, then most of the other stuff, like delivering great customer service or building a long term enduring brand, will happen naturally on its own.

We've grown from almost no sales in 1999 to over $1 billion in gross merchandise sales in 2008. The #1 driver of that growth has been through repeat customers and word of mouth. On any given day, about 75% of our orders are from repeat customers. Our philosophy is to take most of the money we would have spent on paid advertising/marketing and put that into the customer experience instead, including things like free shipping both ways, our 365-day return policy, and staffing our call center 24/7.

Sabina Ptacin How have you created such a powerful and positive customer service force in Zappos?  Even scheduling this interview, the level of positive and quick feedback was notable enough to talk about after we hung up the phone. How do you keep that spirit alive and thriving?
- Sabina Ptacin
It's a combination of making sure that everyone understands our vision of having the Zappos brand be synonymous with the very best customer service as well as making sure that we hire people that are a fit for our company culture. Our culture is defined by our 10 core values:

 1) Deliver WOW Through Service
 2) Embrace and Drive Change
 3) Create Fun and A Little Weirdness
 4) Be Adventurous, Creative, and Open-Minded
 5) Pursue Growth and Learning
 6) Build Open and Honest Relationships With Communication
 7) Build a Positive Team and Family Spirit
 8) Do More With Less
 9) Be Passionate and Determined
10) Be Humble

Margot Tohn Entrepreneurs seem to be very good at starting and developing projects. I've found one of the most challenging things for me is to figure out and then decide what to stop doing, whether it's because the market is changing, it's not profitable, or I'm just not good at something.  Can you give an example of something you stopped doing and include how you made the decision, how long it took you to make, and the outcome?
- Margot Tohn
We are always open to experimenting with ideas we get from customers and employees. For example, we had some customers that suggested that we try selling dog collars, and others that suggested that we try selling sunglasses. Neither of those categories have very much to do with shoes, but we decided to experiment with both.

As it turns out, the dog collars did not sell very well, but the sunglasses did. So we decided to stop selling dog collars and invest more heavily in sunglasses. Today, we have one of the best selections of sunglasses available anywhere, online or offline, and they continue to sell well for us.

How do you feel businesses of all sizes should respond to the recession in order to thrive?
I think the true test of a company's character (or even a person's character) is how they behave when times are tough. For us, we've continued to focus on providing the very best customer service and developing our company culture. My advice to businesses of all sizes is to figure out what you want to stand for (ie, what your core values are) and continue to make decisions based on that.
How important are social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to Zappos.com?
Our primary focus has been on Twitter. We have over 400 employees on Twitter, and you can view their tweets at: http://twitter.zappos.com/employee_tweets

As you can see, most of the tweets are not about business or marketing, but it's a great way for us to connect on a more personal level with both employees and customers. It gives people a glimpse into our company culture, which is ultimately what our brand is all about.

Katie Hellmuth How often do your Tweets turn into actual sales?  Do you measure that in some way?
- Katie Hellmuth Martin
We don't measure that because we don't think of Twitter as a direct marketing channel. Twitter allows us to be more personal with our customers and build relationships with them over time.
What is your favorite thing about entrepreneurship?
I enjoy that there are always new challenges and that you have to be creative in figuring out how to attack those challenges.
What is the biggest challenge you face as an entrepreneur?
I think the biggest challenge is that there are so many great ideas but not enough time or resources to do all of them. The hardest part about being an entrepreneur is figuring out what not to do.
Beth Schoenfeldt Looking beyond Twitter and Facebook, are there any other forms of new media or social networking you're following?
- Beth Schoenfeldt
  Aside from YouTube, not really.
Katie Danziger What was the most effective thing you did to maximize web awareness?
- Katie Danziger
Most of our awareness online or offline has been generated by word of mouth. We really just focus on WOWing our customers, and let our customers do the marketing for us.

Do you have any consistent best-sellers at Zappos.com?
It really varies by season, but in Q4 our top-selling brand has been Uggs: http://www.zappos.com/Uggs
Uggs at Zappos

These boots are made for...getting your entrepreneurial groove on. Here is his letter to Zappos employees with more Q&A about the Amazon acquisition. Thanks Tony!

Study says that women on Twitter are more likely to follow men than women, they obviously didn't focus on women entrepreneurs

Just found an interesting study about Twitter.  Among many things it says that 10% of Twitter users tweet 90% of all messages... THAT I believe.  However, they also say than women on Twitter are more likely to follow men.

As a woman entrepreneur specializing in women entreprenuers, I would say that if there were a study, we are more likely to follow women.  I look to follow every mommy blogger, wedding blogger, small business owner and writer I can find, and that seems to be who is following me.

We (women entreprenuers) use Twitter as a business tool and it works:  it is a great way to connect with other like-minded women, share ideas & resources, and get the word out about blog postings, sales, events, workshops and more.

Here is the article, do you agree?  http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE55381S20090605

That is interesting. The article appears to be written by a woman, too.

While I'm not a mom, thus, not a mommy blogger, I try to keep my follows balanced. I follow those who I have an affinity for and emulate in both personality and knowledge. Perhaps I should go thru and guesstimate the male/female ratio...

Entrepreneurs can learn a thing or two about becoming an overnight sensation from Susan Boyle on "Britain’s Got Talent"

It would be hard to miss the phenomenon that is Susan Boyle, at this point over 15 million have watched her shock the audience and judges on the show "Britain’s Got Talent" with her beautiful rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical "Les Miserables.”    I know that my husband and I account for at least 5 viewings as we were blown away and were compelled to watch it over and over.

Susan is the perfect example of an “overnight sensation” created by years of training and preparation mixed in with a dose of luck and timing.  Susan didn’t just walk on the stage and belt out the song for the first time; she actually trained, practiced and performed as much as possible in her village.  She had the desire for a professional music career with the dream of being like Elaine Page, the first lady of the British musical. And even though, at the age of 47 she might have easily given up her dream, she made the effort to enter a national talent contest and we all know the result; Susan is now an international “overnight” sensation.

This is the story that I hear over and over again with entrepreneurs, entertainers and artists.  After years of sacrifice, preparation and pounding the pavement, you get that great review, a celebrity wears your product or you are featured on Oprah and all of a sudden you are the belle of the ball.  Collective-E co-founder Sabina tells me that she can work on a press campaign for months before she gets the big break and the client is everywhere.  Examples include everyone from Rachael Ray,  to JK Rawlings. or actress Naomi Watts who struggled for years in Hollywood before breaking out as a star.

So what does this mean for you?

•    Have a clear strategy and vision.  Do you really know what it is you want?  Are you sure that you want it?  Have you really thought about the implications of getting it?  Susan’s life is changed forever, you might say for the good, but she is giving up her privacy, leisure time and lifestyle.

•    Be prepared.  Say Daily Candy or Oprah calls are you ready?  Can you produce enough products, is your website ready?   Have you practiced your interviewing skills when the media comes knocking at the door?  Do you have a quality product, service and everything you need ready to go?   Preparation is key so that when you get your big break you are ready to go on the ride.

•    Never give up.  If you have the urge to give up on your dream, just click here and watch Susan Boyle.

I agree with Jack & Suzy Welch, it really may be the perfect time to launch the right kind of business

For awhile I have been saying if you can make people money or save people money, now is a great time to start a business.  From affordable office space to low interest loans and really smart and qualified people looking for jobs, starting a business right now might make sense.  In the April 13th issue of Business Week, Jack & Suzy Welch give 4 reasons to think about starting now or taking advantage of this time to grow:

1.     A successful start up needs smart, driven and “hungry” people to thrive, and they are available in hoards.
2.    People are more grateful to their companies and employers for jobs and therefore, work harder and give more.
3.    Venture capital and some banks still eager to lend, and need to lend, to survive.
4.    A great time to position for growth, start fresh with legacy costs and ride the wave of recovery.

I would add the following points:

•    You can negotiate the price of almost everything these days, from printing to website design or legal work; it might be the least expensive time in history to start a business.
•    Social media and other low cost marketing methods along with advancements in technology are evening out the playing field and even tipping the advantage towards small business.
•    Finally, what do you have to lose?  If you don’t have a job and the job market is looking gloomy, you might as well start a business or hang your shingle on the door as a freelancer or consultant.  At the best, you’ll have a thriving business at the end of the recession, at the worst, you will have gained some really great experience, made a lot of connections & built your network and be much more interesting and valuable to future employers when they do start to hire.

Why Perez Hilton is more than a guilty pleasure

Last night I was watching Celebrity Apprentice for the first time and on comes celebrity blogger Perez Hilton as a judge.  I thought to myself, "that guy is everywhere". For those of you who aren’t addicted, he is like the Jon Stewart of entertainment, reporting news and pointing out hypocrisy in the celebrity and entertainment culture.   I know many of you may think that people like him represent the downfall of our culture, but to me, it is a fun, entertaining way to take a break during my day and also a study in brand building.  If you ignore him or think you are above it, you might be missing something that you can learn for your brand.

Here are a few things you can learn from Perez:

  • Blogging. Perez started as a blog, just a simple blog.  People often come to us wanting to start a business on a low budget and we always suggest starting a blog, in fact, we think it is a critical component to brand success and it can be free.  Yes, you may have to spend a bit of money on design, but it is a much more affordable solution that a full website, can be just as effective and is a great place to start.
  • Making money by following your passion.  Perez Hilton lives, breathes and worships celebrity.  You can tell this guy really loves and appreciates what he is doing or he couldn’t be as obsessive compulsive about what he is doing. The thing is, that is what it takes!  Getting something off the ground is a lot of hard work, whether you are doing fashion or roofing, you have to truly love what you are doing as an entrepreneur or it will never fly.
  • Addictive.  Perez Hilton is like sugar, totally addictive.  How does he do that?  He is relevant, he is funny and he is on top of the action. He rarely misses a beat.  He is like CNN, if there is a celebrity breaking story you know you can go to him to get the updated scoop.   To build a successful brand yours too must be addictive, from the advice people can’t live without to the latest news in your industry or the perfect lip gloss, consistently thinking about what makes someone come back is as important, if not more important, than getting them to you in the first place.
  • Brand extensions.  From books to hosting to guest spots on so many shows, Perez has extended his brand off the blog.  In other words, he has created multiple sources of revenue besides just advertising on his blog.  After you build your brand you want to start creating multiple ways to make money, do you have a book idea?  Can you start consulting? Speaking?  Products?  In other words, don’t stop creating, if you stop it is over and your brand will slip away.
  • Trends.  Whatever you may think of the content, you can look past it and see trends in music, fashion and pop culture that you can relate to your brand.  It is fun to put a pop culture reference in your own blogging or maketing, or you may be targeting the same demographic (which is a lot different and in many cases older than you may think) and want to know what they are paying attention to or reading.  Being relevant helps with SEO and in building a bond with your readers and customers.

So don’t be ashamed if Perez Hilton is your guilty pleasure too,  just think of your time on the site as an exercise in brand building.
